AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Offers Free Tax Preparation and Assistance for Oklahomans

Program Helped State Residents Receive More Than $21 Million in Refunds Last Year

(TULSA, Okla.) – Tax-Aide, a free tax preparation service from AARP Foundation, is available in 24 cities across Oklahoma February 1 - April 15, 2017. Last year, 321 Oklahoma AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers helped more than 34,126 people file their federal and state tax returns at 36 sites statewide. This resulted in refunds totaling $17.5 million and a total Earned Income Tax Credit of nearly $4.1 million. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is offered in conjunction with the IRS.  To take advantage of Tax-Aides participants do not have to be a member of AARP or a retiree.

Volunteers are trained and IRS-certified each year to ensure their knowledge of revisions to the U.S. tax code, according to Tax-Aide State Coordinator Shirley Raymond. “Taxes prepared, free of charge, by AARP Tax Aide volunteers are filed electronically, using the exact same completely secure systems used by those more expensive, for-profit companies,” said Raymond.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is operating sites in Ada, Bartlesville, Broken Arrow, Chandler, Duncan, Durant, Edmond, Enid, Fort Gibson, Lawton, McAlester, Midwest City, Muskogee, Mustang, Norman, Oklahoma City (seven locations), Owasso, Ponca City, Sallisaw, Sapulpa, Stillwater, Tahlequah, Yukon and Tulsa (three locations). You can find a location near you by searching the Tax-Aide site locator.

Assistance is most effective when participants bring to their appointment all necessary paperwork, such as pension papers, broker transactions, any source of income or deduction, etc. It is also recommended that participants bring a copy of their previous year’s tax return, so volunteers can check them to make sure nothing has been missed.
