A Guide for Family Caregivers in Pennsylvania

CAREGIVING

Every day, nearly 1.6 million Pennsylvanians perform a great labor of love: caring for parents, spouses, adult children with disabilities, friends, and other loved ones so they can remain in their homes – where they want to be. They manage medications, provide transportation, prepare meals, handle finances, perform complex medical tasks, and much more.

Caregiving can be a 24/7 job that is emotionally, physically, and financially difficult. That is why AARP Pennsylvania is working to support family caregivers, striving to make your big responsibilities a little bit easier.

We understand that caregiving may be one of the most important and challenging roles you’ll ever take on. No matter where you are in your caregiving journey – starting to plan; taking care of a family member in your home, in a facility, or from a distance; or managing end-of-life caregiving responsibilities – having resources at your fingertips will make the process easier.

AARP developed a Family Caregiver Guide with you, the caregiver, in mind.  The Guide is designed to serve as a starting point to help you find the services and support you might need throughout your journey.  If you would like to order a print copy of this online guide, simply call the toll-free AARP Family Caregiving Resource Line at 877-333-5885 and indicate which state(s) you would like to receive. A copy will be mailed to you.

By working with elected officials, other policy makers, and community partners, AARP is fighting to advance policy options that will help family caregivers – and the loved ones for whom they care.

Earlier this year, AARP made House Bill 464 one of our legislative priorities for the 2021-22 legislative session. HB 464 was designed to expand eligibility and allow flexibility in the administration of Pennsylvania’s Caregiver Support Program. The bill was signed into law by Governor Wolf on June 11 and is now known as Act 20 of 2021.  The program provides support to caregivers – including caregivers of older adults, grandparents raising grandchildren, and older caregivers of adults with a disability. The Pennsylvania Department of Aging is responsible to for administering the program, which is accessed at the community level through your local area agency on aging.
