AARP Pennsylvania Statement on Telemedicine Legislation

AARP Pennsylvania today encouraged members of the General Assembly and Wolf Administration to reach agreement on legislation that would establish new guidelines for telemedicine services in the Commonwealth.

“AARP Pennsylvania has consistently advocated for our state to join more than 35 other states that have already approved legislation that mandates insurance providers cover telemedicine services the same as in-person services,” said AARP State Director Bill Johnston-Walsh.

“When SB857 passed 47-1 in the Senate last year, AARP Pennsylvania anticipated that telemedicine would be another tool in the toolbox to ensure that our 1.8 million members would benefit from improved access to quality patient care by helping them overcome barriers to care that are created by distance,” added Johnston-Walsh. “The coronavirus pandemic has significantly altered the landscape of how and where Pennsylvanians access and communicate with their healthcare practitioners, and it is obvious that telemedicine has become an essential tool to limit the spread of the virus by minimizing the need for older adults and other vulnerable populations to visit their health provider or a health facility for evaluation.”

AARP Pennsylvania is hopeful that the Governor and the General Assembly can reach a compromise on this important legislation in the near future.
