Grant Funds New Golden Age Cafe in Philadelphia

Livable Drawing

Philadelphia’s Center in the Park, a social and assistance hub for older adults, has transformed an office space that was no longer needed into a new gathering spot.

The Golden Age Café, which opened last November, was funded by an AARP Community Challenge grant and a state Department of Aging initiative. Now, the center’s members and guests can sip coffee or tea in the café, munch on homemade baked goods, listen to music and access free Wi-Fi, says Renee Cunningham, the Center in the Park’s executive director.

Founded in 1968, the center is focused on wellness and other activities that encourage older adults to engage their minds, bodies and spirits. Programs range from housing counseling to art therapy to fitness and dance classes.
