Sept. 6th Patient Safety Seminar - Spartanburg

AARP South Carolina hopes new health care safety information provided by a national nonprofit group and an upcoming patient safety seminar September 6 in Spartanburg will increase the number of well-informed, proactive patients. The seminar will feature leading experts on patient safety and is free and open to the public.

“Many of us could land in the hospital for any number of reasons, especially as we get older,” said Teresa Arnold, AARP South Carolina state director. “So knowing how to protect yourself could help prevent hospital errors or infections.”

South Carolina is one of five states selected by the Informed Patient Institute (IPI) for a campaign to educate residents about how they can help prevent hospital infections. Carol Cronin from the Informed Patient Institute will share South Carolina specific tip sheets that help consumers walk through the process for expressing concerns about issues with hospitals, nursing homes and doctors.

Helen Haskell, founder of Mothers Against Medical Error will share her family’s story of losing a son due to medical error and how it led to the passage of South Carolina’s “Lewis Blackmon Patient Safety” law. In addition, Dr. Libba Patterson, USC School of Law and Dr. Rick Foster from the South Carolina Hospital Association will speak.

The seminar will be held at the Spartanburg Marriott September 6 beginning at 10 a.m. and conclude at 2 p.m. with lunch provided. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required by clicking here or calling 1-866-389-5655.
