For Bill Zubke, AARP South Dakota's 605K Challenge is an added incentive to keep up with his regular walking routine.
The 74-year-old retired teacher and AARP volunteer from Watertown, in the eastern part of the state, walks about 2 miles almost every morning—even when it means doing circuits inside Walmart when it’s too snowy. While he’s been a dedicated walker for years, the fitness challenge gives him “a carrot” to maintain that routine—“other than feeling better,” he says.
The 605K Challenge invites AARP members to track their physical activity—whether it’s walking, swimming, running, biking or even Rollerblading—throughout the year. The goal is to reach 605 kilometers.
The number 605 is the area code for South Dakota and also roughly the distance across the state in kilometers. That translates to about 376 miles for participants who prefer to measure their progress in that way.
“The whole purpose is to find out what you like to do and stay active,” says Lindsey Holmquest, AARP South Dakota’s associate state director for community outreach.
Participants who share their progress can get AARP swag, such as stocking caps or reflective gear. AARP launched the challenge in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic prevented gathering in groups, and it continues to be popular. Hundreds of people take part each year.
AARP also teams up with local groups for organized outdoor activities. Events include the Falls Area Bicyclists Trail Challenge in August, a 20-mile bike ride around Sioux Falls, and the Black Hills Volkssport Association’s fall Volksmarch at Crazy Horse Memorial in Custer.
