AARP Utah is pleased to announce that Salt Lake County has been designated as an Age-Friendly Community; the first in the state of Utah. As part of the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities, this designation underscores Salt Lake County’s commitment to fostering neighborhoods that promote healthy aging and enhance quality of life.
"The age-friendly network supports organizations like counties, states and municipalities that want to dedicate some of their energy to helping older adults," said Alan Ormsby, AARP Utah State Director. "It asses things like housing, transportation, access to key services like healthcare and opportunities to participate in community services and supports."

AARP Utah's State Director Alan Ormsby joined Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson on Wednesday to make the announcement at the Millcreek Community Center. They were also joined by leaders from Salt Lake County’s Office of Regional Development and Aging & Adult Services who helped make this designation possible.
“Being recognized as an Age-Friendly Community highlights our ongoing efforts to ensure that every resident—regardless of age—can thrive,” said Mayor Jenny Wilson. “This initiative strengthens our focus on inclusive planning, sustainable community development, and quality services for older adults and people of all ages.”
AARP believes that everything that makes life easier and better for older adults, also makes things better for the entire community.
Membership in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities means that a community’s elected leadership has made a commitment to actively work with residents and local advocates to make their town, city, county or state an age-friendly place to live.
Ormsby says this partnership will be long term; “It'll take several years to fully flesh this out, but that's what an age-friendly community is all about. It's listening, identifying and then implementing the things that the older adults in that community really want.”
