Help Children Improve Their Reading

woman and child reading (3)

Children who can’t read at grade level by the third grade are four times as likely not to graduate from high school as proficient readers. AARP Foundation’s Experience Corps can help.

Volunteer tutors for the program have helped over 30,000 kids in more than 20 cities become better readers and more successful students.

AARP District of Columbia invites residents 50 and older to join the multigenerational effort, which in the 2017–18 school year had 91 tutors assisting 597 students in 50 classrooms.

Volunteers must be at least 50, pass a criminal background check and basic literacy screening, attend 25 hours of preservice training and commit to tutoring 5 to 15 hours a week during the school year.

Studies show that students in Experience Corps have higher test scores, better behavior and improved literacy skills.
