AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is primarily an all-volunteer organization and is always looking to expand and enrich its team of volunteers. Tax-Aide is an AARP Foundation program that offers free tax filing help for those who need it most, especially adults 50 and older, during the tax season.
Tax-Aide offers a variety of opportunities for interested volunteers, many of which do not require tax preparation. Some of the positions volunteers may qualify for include:
- Tax councilors who work with clients to assist them in preparing their tax returns.
- Client facilitators who greet taxpayers, review their documents and prepare them to meet with a tax councilor.
- Technical services volunteers who work with site technical management, technical equipment such as computers and printers and provide technical support for tax councilors.
- Recruiting specialists who promote Tax-Aide to prospective volunteers.
- Training volunteers who train new and returning volunteers on changes in tax law and tax preparation procedures.
- Partnership and communications specialists who develop and execute programs and materials to promote Tax-Aide services and volunteer opportunities.
- There are also many leadership positions held by volunteers at the local site, district and state levels.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers receive training and continued support in a welcoming environment. There are a variety of roles for individuals at every level of experience who want to make a difference in someone else’s life.
Prior to 2020, 1,000 AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers in Washington helped more than 82,0000 people file their federal and state tax returns. Prior to disruptions from COVID-19 in 2020, the program was offered at approximately 150 sites in Washington including senior centers, libraries and other convenient locations.
