A new law passed by the West Virginia Legislature will expand the West Virginia Veterans’ Council from nine to 11 members, ensuring diverse representation from regions of the state and military service branches.
AARP West Virginia advocated for the change.
The council, composed of veterans who served honorably and during wartime, advises the secretary of the state Department of Veterans Assistance, the governor and lawmakers on policies and legislation affecting veterans and their families.
“We need to make sure that all of our veterans who call West Virginia home know what they can get, what they are eligible for. This gives us the opportunity to do that,” Edward Diaz, secretary of the department, said at the April bill signing.
