As of November 1, 2025, millions of Americans—including many older adults—may not receive their monthly food benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. This disruption affects individuals living on fixed incomes, many of whom rely on SNAP to afford groceries and maintain their health.

Jan Wilberg worked for decades in social service agencies and as a nonprofit consultant before retiring in 2018 to spend more time as a volunteer with various Milwaukee organizations. She received the 2024 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service, the state’s top volunteer honor.

AARP Wisconsin was one of three groups invited to speak at the first meeting of the Speaker’s Task Force on Elder Services on Oct. 30, which focused on scams and fraud prevention information.

The Riverworks Development Corporation has received the AARP Wisconsin Small Dollar, Big Impact Grant. They plan to use the $1,000 to install plaques alongside artists’ murals and other projects on the Beerline Trail in Milwaukee.

More than $3.2 million in projects across the country are funded through 2021 Community Challenge grants. AARP Wisconsin will be distributing $88,000 to six grantees for local projects.

The Friends of the Railroad Park, Inc. have received the AARP Wisconsin Small Dollar, Big Impact Grant. They plan to use the $1,000 to install grills at the park.
AARP is encouraging Wisconsinites to enjoy the state park system on their own through its Passport to the Outdoors program. Participants who log their trips to state parks may receive giveaways.
