LOS ANGELES – AARP California is proud to continue the Andrus Opportunity Award Scholarship, which honors the legacy of AARP founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus through. Each year, the Andrus Opportunity Award Scholarship will provide $5,000 in financial assistance to a graduating senior who demonstrates academic excellence, leadership, and a strong commitment to community service. The award is funded by a $50,000 grant, which will help fund the scholarships for the next ten years, ensuring lasting support for students.
AARP shares a deep connection with Lincoln High School through its founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, who served as the school’s—and California’s—first woman principal from 1916 to 1944, when it was known as East Los Angeles High School. Dr. Andrus later went on to establish AARP, building on her lifelong commitment to education, leadership, and empowerment.
“The Andrus Opportunity Award Scholarship represents the values of AARP, empowering individuals to reach their full potential at every stage of their life. By supporting Lincoln High School graduates, we’re helping to open doors to higher education and lifelong learning. We are proud to continue Dr. Andrus’ vision by supporting students who strive to learn, lead, and serve their communities, and each scholarship is a step towards that vision,” said Michael Murray, AARP California State Director.
Since 2007, AARP has demonstrated a strong commitment to supporting Lincoln High School through the Andrus Award and a $100,000 AARP Foundation grant to establish a performing arts program and restore the school’s auditorium, now named after Dr. Andrus. In 2013, the AARP Foundation provided an additional $50,000 to fund the annual scholarships, administered by the Lincoln High School Alumni Association.
The Andrus Opportunity Award Scholarship applications are vetted by the Lincoln High School Alumni Association and AARP California.
