AARP AARP States California Events

AARP in Los Angeles brings you this Hispanic Heritage month a series of events thinking of you and your family.

Español From the classic celebration of Mexico and the Central American countries’ independence day, the presentation of an AARP financial study about the economic situation of Californians, to our association with the popular soccer team LA Galaxy; AARP in Los Angeles has prepared several events to celebrate our contributions as Latinos in this society and also to provide you with tools that will help you make your life a better experience. All our events are free, but in some of them you must sign up in advance.  Please notice that some events are in Spanish only.

WHAT: We want to celebrate mentors and the people who support the passions of others. In this case soccer. Stop by our booth at the stadium and nominate someone who supports your passion for soccer, while you learn more about the other events that AARP is doing in your community. Fiesta 2
Saturday, September 16:


WHAT: Fiesta Ranchera at MAOF (Mexican American Opportunity Foundation) raising money for older adults’ service program. There will be live Mariachis, food, dancing, and raffles.

Sunday, Sept. 17:


WHAT: Mexico and the Central American countries independence day celebration with a family day. The Mariachi Lindas Mexicanas and the Mariachi Conservatory will be present.

We will also have a demonstration of the Meso American ball game. Plus, workshops, gardening, and culinary arts. Food for sale from Mama’s Hot Tamales.

East of Salinas
Thursday, September 21:


WHAT: Presentation of documentary “East of Salinas”. A third-grade boy dreams of becoming an engineer. While the intimidation of deportation and violence of gangs threatens its future, this generous and ambitious boy begins to understand what it truly means to be "born in Mexico". Guest presenter: Laura Pacheco producer and Director.

WHAT: Breaking the glass ceiling with a Golf Ball. 5th. Annual Golf Tournament for women and network pre-reception for future golfers. All are welcome. Where Latina leaders in the areas of business, banking, law, education, finance, technology, real estate, Government, medicine, and more come together to celebrate.

Thursday, September 28:

WHAT: Round table: celebrating the Braceros legacy. "Winners in the United States". Hear about the experience of the Braceros program from the mouth of several of their children.  The bracero experience was one of exploitation but also of opportunities. The program had a direct impact on immigration and labor policy and, more importantly, in the formation of thriving Mexican American communities here in the United States. With its legacy of struggle and success, the history of the Bracero program was really sweet and sour. In this interactive program, we can be witnesses to the success stories of the children of the Braceros, such as (José Luis Huizar, Member of the Council of the city of Los Angeles), see bracero interviews and art show.

Banda Limon
Wednesday, October 4:


WHAT: Private concert with the renowned group Banda Limón, in partnership with Univision Radio. This will be an exclusive concert for AARP in Los Angeles and Univision radio.  We will be giving free tickets to air, online and on the streets during the three weeks prior to the date of the concert.

Jean Lesbian Documentary


WHAT: Presentation of the documentary Jeanne. This new documentary explores the life of the pioneering activist and advocate for the rights of lesbians, and founder of the West Coast LGBTQ movement. There will be a discussion after the presentation by filmmaker Gregory Dávila.

House crisis, Zocalo


WHAT: Presentation of the AARP Financial Security Survey “CA Dreaming of Struggling” at Zócalo Public Square. With the participation of Senate Pro Temp Kevin de León, AARP California State Director Nancy MacPherson, and dean of the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affair Gary Segura, examining how our state’s housing market boom both enables and endangers the California dream of independence, the good life, and having a home of one’s own.

Artistas Chicanos

WHAT: Presentation of the documentary Chicano Public Art: Identity in the 60's and 70's. Join us in a conversation with the pioneering artists Chicanos Barbara Carrasco, Willie Herron, David Botello, Wayne Healy, Glenna Avila and Yreina Cervantes, exploring the murals and reclaiming urban space of the Chicano voice. The conversation will be moderated by Professor Sybil Venegas.

Saturday, October 14:


WHAT: Screening of the film "La Bamba" (1987). Celebrate with us the life and music of the beloved musician Ritchie Valens in the 30th anniversary of the screening of this film. In addition to the film, we will have live music, food, and vendors from the community. La Bamba is an American biographical film written and directed by Luis Valdez which follows the life and career of the stars of Chicano  rock 'n' roll  Ritchie Valens. Featured in the film Lou Diamond Phillips as Valens,  Esai MoralesRosanna DeSotoElizabeth PeñaDanielle von Zerneck, and  Joe Pantoliano. The film describes the effect that the career of Valens had in the life of his half-brother Bob Morales, his girlfriend Donna Ludwig, and the rest of his family.
