On March 31, we will celebrate the life and legacy of civil rights leader and labor movement activist Cesar E. Chavez. Born near Yuma, Arizona in 1927, Chavez is regarded as one of the most important labor activists of our time. Dedicating his life to helping others, Chavez’ efforts helped improve the poor working conditions of migrant farm workers through extensive community organization. Chavez co-founded the United Farm Workers of America, which advocates for the rights of the farm workers.

Much like AARP Founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, Chavez was a strong advocate for the health, employment, and respect for vulnerable persons. Chavez’s leadership for social change led to increased pay and improved working conditions for farm workers across the nation. His ultimate goal was the empowerment of communities and the strengthening of our nation through improving the lives of underrepresented individuals.

In early 2008, President Obama established a national commemorative holiday celebrating the life of Cesar Chavez:

“Chavez left a legacy as an educator, environmentalist, and a civil rights leader. And his cause lives on. ..And we should honor him for what he's taught us about making America a stronger, more just, and more prosperous nation.”

Cesar Chavez day serves not only as a holiday in California and other states, but also as a day of public service, when many choose to serve their communities in honor of Chavez’s life’s work.

“We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community... Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own.” – Cesar E. Chavez
