EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES TO AGE WITH DIGNITY

Español  Participants ideas will be included in NHCOA’s annual “State of Hispanic Older Adults”

The National Hispanic Council on Aging (NHCOA), will bring together members of the older adult population, along with elected officials, social advocates, and service providers in an “Aging with Dignity” Town Hall at The California Endowment 1000 N Alameda St, Los Angeles, CA 90012 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.,  on August 30 th.

This linguistically and culturally safe space will give those present the opportunity to discuss solutions to issues such as economic insecurity, hunger, and unaffordable housing, with special emphasis on Hispanic Caregiving.  This activity is part of a three-day regional conference that also includes a two-day Empowerment and Civic Engagement Training (28 th and 29 th)— NHCOA’s signature leadership program.

Latino low-income family caregivers spend about 44% of their income on Caregiving; therefore NHCOA is working to create awareness about the need to approve Recognize, Assist, Include, Support, and Engage (RAISE) Family Caregivers Act.

“It is crucial that Hispanics become involved in this initiative and urge Congress to act on this bill to help the nation’s 40 million family caregivers. The RAISE Family Caregivers Act would require the development of a national strategy to support family caregivers.  Our goal is to propose a national strategy that supports and meets the real needs of Hispanic families who care for their loved ones,” said Dr. Yanira Cruz, President and CEO of NHCOA.

“We recognize that most of us will eventually care for a loved one or require care ourselves,” said AARP California state director Nancy McPherson. “That’s why AARP strongly supports the RAISE Family Caregivers Act, which aims to recognize, assist, and support family caregivers across the nation. It’s also why we are so pleased to participate in this “Aging with Dignity” town hall event with NHCOA. Events like this one are critical to gaining a better understanding of the specific needs of the Latino caregiving community.”

All solutions and recommendations discussed during “NHCOA Regional Conferences: Empowering Communities to Age with Dignity” will be presented on a national level through NHCOA’s, “State of Hispanic Older Adults Report,” a publication that is released annually on Capitol Hill during the fall.

The National Hispanic Council on Aging (NHCOA, pronounced NAH-CO-AH) is the leading national organization working to improve the lives of Hispanic older adults, their families, and their caregivers. Headquartered in Washington, DC, NHCOA has been a strong voice dedicated to promoting, educating, and advocating for research, policy, and practice in the areas of economic security, health, and housing for Hispanic older adults, families, and caregivers for more than 30 years.
