AARP in San Jose is here to help you take on June with local offerings, resources and more. We hope you will join us at one or all of the following events!

LOCAL EVENTS:

On Lok Open House and Health Fair - San Jose| June 1st
AARP will host an information table at On Lok’s East San Jose PACE Center Open House and Health Fair. Come enjoy great company and learn about caregiving resources and more. Learn more and register for this FREE event HERE.

World Elder Abuse Day - Campbell| June 13th
The County of Santa Clara, Social Services Agency, Department of Aging and Adult Services will host an annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) gathering in Campbell. WEAAD is in support of the United Nations International Plan of Action, acknowledging the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue. AARP will table the event, providing information on how you can protect yourself from frauds and scams, and we’ll provide fun giveaways! Learn more and register for this FREE event HERE.

TEK Workshops - San Jose | June 14th
The AARP TEK (Technology, Education and Knowledge) workshops are an opportunity to grow your confidence in using mobile technology to gather information, take photos and stay connected with family and friends. At these FREE workshops, all participants will get hands-on experience with devices, and a free touchscreen stylus pen. We encourage you to participate in both the “intro” and “beyond the basics” courses! Space is limited. Registration is required.

Northside Night Markets – San Jose | June 15th

AARP will sponsor the Northside Night Markets at Backesto Park starting June 15th and going every Saturday evening until August 31st. Join us as we kickoff opening night, and don’t forget to stop by AARP’s table to learn more about our work locally and receive your giveaway. We will be there June 15th, July 13th and August 31st. Juneteenth - San Jose | June 15th
Hosted by the African American Community Service Agency, AARP will participate in the 38th annual Juneteenth in the Park Festival in San Jose. There will be live performances, educational offerings and more. Learn more about this FREE event HERE. Entrance after 1pm will require a purchase of a $10 ticket.

CAREversation - San Jose | June 16th & June 23rd
CAREversations are an ideal way to bond with other family caregivers as you enjoy complimentary food and drinks. Join us and learn how to build a caregiver support network, tips and tools to care for yourself, and where you can find local resources. Kalayaan SF Festival - San Francisco | June 22nd
Come celebrate Filipino culture at Kalayaan SF in the heart of downtown San Francisco. There will be cultural performances, live entertainment, food vendors and more. Stop by AARP’s table for resources around fraud prevention and receive your fun giveaway! Learn more about this FREE event HERE.

Senior and Older Adults Health Fair hosted by Senator Jim Beall – San Jose| June 28th
Stop by this health fair to participate in a short Zumba session and network with several healthy living organizations. You will have the opportunity to learn more about community resources and activities in your neighborhood, and do not forget to stop by the AARP table. A light and healthy breakfast will be provided. SF Pride - San Francisco | June 29th & 30th
Pride is ageless – join us at San Francisco Pride on Saturday, June 29th and Sunday, June 30th as the AARP Block Party team partners with local AARP staff and volunteers to bring you a fully immersive AARP experience. LOCAL RESOURCES:

“The New Age”
Throughout June, AARP is providing resources to help you #DisruptAging and stay healthy!

  • The AARP Fit & Fun Challenge is back this year, with AARP Wellness Ambassador Denise Austin encouraging participants to commit to walking at least 30 minutes a day for eight weeks. Participants will have a chance to win the grand prize, a spa weekend getaway for two. The challenge starts June 1st and runs through June 30th. Learn more and participate HERE.
  • AARP is changing the way we think about aging through our #DisruptAging Campaign – because aging doesn’t mean you’re “old” – aging means you’re living! Learn more and share your story HERE.

LOCAL VOLUNTEERING:

AARP Volunteer Recruitment
AARP is seeking volunteers for events and education outreach in San Jose and the Greater Bay Area. Event Team members provide support at community functions, while Education Team members give presentations to small groups on topics such as home repairs to facilitate aging in place, caregiving, and job searching in the digital age. Training and support are provided to all interested volunteers. To learn more and express interest, email cavolunteer@aarp.org or call 626-585-2612 and leave your name, phone number and email.

Also, check back for additional information on our “Sip, Sample, and Serve” volunteer recruitment event that is set to take place in the South Bay between late June and July. This fun and FREE event is a great opportunity to learn more about local volunteer opportunities with AARP and meet new friends.
