One of the AARP Foundation goals is to assist low- to moderate-income taxpayers with FREE tax return preparation to ensure they receive any applicable tax credits and deductions. This year, Colorado has made significant changes that will financially benefit our clients, especially those who have not filed in recent years.
Plus this year, most Tax-Aide sites will again offer in-person volunteer prepared returns. Some sites require appointments, and some offer walk-in service. Check on the AARP Tax-Aide Locator website below for services at your local site.
Changes to Federal Tax Law for 2023
- The generous tax credits from the pandemic years are expiring. Some will see reduced refunds as the tax law reverts for Earned Income Credit, Child Credit, Child Care Credit.
Changes to Colorado Tax Law for 2023 will benefit many full-time residents over 65.
- Another round of TABOR refunds may be provided ($TBD) for Colorado residents who file their Colorado tax returns.
- New REFUNDABLE Senior Housing Tax Credit of up to $1,000. Income limited, with the largest credit for Federal Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) less than $25,000, and phases out by $75,000 AGI. This refund is not available to those taking the Homestead Property Tax exemption.
- Social Security benefits that were taxed at Federal level are NO LONGER taxed by Colorado (for those over age 65).
