AARP Statement: We Are Outraged

AARP Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy & Engagement Officer Nancy A. LeaMond issued the following statement reacting to the Build Back Better framework’s failure to lower prescription drug prices. LeaMond said:

"We are outraged that the initial framework does not lower prescription drug prices. It would be a monumental mistake for Congress not to act on an historic opportunity to improve the lives of virtually every American family.

“Overwhelming majorities want Congress to pass legislation that would allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices and put a cap on out-of-pocket costs that older adults pay. Americans are fed up with promises that have not been kept.

“Voters 50+ are a major force in every election and they expect the President and Congress to keep their promises and let Medicare negotiate for lower drug prices. They need to include these provisions in the package before they can expect seniors to support it.”

An AARP Survey found 87% of Democrats and 85% of Republicans support allowing Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices.
