Dolores Huerta in Denver

Dolores Huerta has always been an agent for change.

She and Cesar Chavez cofounded the United Farmworkers movement of America in 1962. She has spent decades working to elevate the status and working conditions for migrant laborers.

The 1965 Delano Grape Strike launched the UFW into a national labor movement. During this time, Huerta lobbied for change, negotiated contracts with growers and organized farmworkers. She was instumental in spearheading farmworker political activities and she is still promoting political change.

Awarded the Puffin/Nation Prize in 2002 for creative citizenship, Huerta created the Dolores Huerta Foundation, a nonprofit that operates to inspire and organize communities to build volunteer organizations that pursue social justice.

Among other notable recognition, she has received The Eleanor Roosevelt Humans Rights Award and The Presidential Medal of Freedom.
