How to Avoid ID Theft and Fraud

The internet has turned into an even more critical tool to stay in touch with friends/family, conduct business, shop and get information. Scammers are also online looking for new ways of getting personal and financial information. Take proper precautions to keep your information safe and money in your pocket by avoiding these common scams:

Phishing: Scammers send convincing emails or text messages impersonating a business or government agency trying to gain personal or financial information. Ignore unsolicited contacts requesting critical information.  

Social Media: Lock down privacy settings. Avoid contact from anyone you don’t know in person. Beware of offers that sound “too good to be true.” Never send money to someone you met online

Tech Support: Never respond to pop-ups or unsolicited contacts claiming to be from Microsoft, Amazon or other large computer companies. Seek reputable support in your community if you need computer help.

Online Dating: Scammers use dating and social media sites to find those who are seeking companionship. Cease communication and report any individual who requests money or goods.  

Fraudulent Sales: Fake sites and offers are more prevalent than ever peddling anything from puppies to diet pills. Do your research before making any purchase. If you shop on Craigslist or other marketplace sites, only deal locally, never wire money or agree to pay via peer-to-peer app.
