AARP Applauds PURA’s Rejection of United Illuminating Company’s Rate Increase Request

concept of expensive energy bill

AARP Connecticut applauds the final decision by the Connecticut Public Utility Regulatory Authority (PURA) to reject United Illuminating Company’s supplemental rate increase request. An approved increase would have significantly raised the cost of electricity for Connecticut ratepayers, who already pay the highest retail electricity price in the continental United States.

More than 4,500 residents signed petitions opposing the rate increase over the course of campaign.

“This decision by PURA follows laws the legislature passed, and were supported by AARP Connecticut, that are intended to protect ratepayers from these types of rate increases,” said John Erlingheuser, AARP Connecticut Senior Advocacy Director. “The rate hike that United Illuminating requested was yet another financial burden for residents 50-plus and their families, especially older adults and middle to low-income residents who are already struggling to make ends meet in the current inflationary climate. AARP encourages PURA to continue to apply the laws that the legislature passed that require them to take ratepayer impact into account when determining rate adjustments.”
