Thousands of Connecticut Ratepayers Sign Petition Opposing Yankee Gas Services Company Rate Increase Request

Gas Bill

AARP Connecticut submitted to the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) the names of more than 2,000 Connecticut residents who signed a petition opposing a proposal by Yankee Gas Services Company d/b/a Eversource Energy to implement a rate increase that will significantly raise the cost of natural gas for Connecticut residential customers.

Under the proposed application, Yankee Gas Services requests an increase in the fixed monthly charge by 39% and an overall rate increase of approximately 43% which would translate to a raise in Connecticut ratepayers’ monthly bill by $46.

“Utility rates are an essential pocketbook issue for Connecticut residents 50-plus and their families who are already facing a daily challenge to make ends meet from soaring costs on many other necessary consumer goods such as food and medicine,” said John Erlingheuser, AARP Connecticut Senior Advocacy Director. “AARP calls on PURA to reject the latest excessive rate increase proposal by one of Connecticut’s residential energy providers, which will raise bills before consumers even adjust their thermostats.”

In addition to the petition signed by ratepayers, in January AARP Connecticut submitted public testimony urging PURA to deny the proposed rate increase Yankee Gas Services Company, which would make the essential service unaffordable for many older adults.

The petition signed by thousands of Connecticut ratepayers follows:
