AARP announces the City of Dover as the winner for the AARP Community Challenge, aiming to create change and improve quality of life at the community-level. The winning project is a re-opening of a walking/biking path in Dover. Each project was partially or fully funded through the AARP Community Challenge grant.

AARP is now accepting applications for Community Challenge grants to fund projects that spark change in local communities. The grant program is part of AARP’s nationwide Livable Communities initiative that aims to make our communities great places to live for everyone.

More and more people age 50+ are moving to Delaware. And most of them are hitting the road and doing it safely. In fact, we know that older drivers are safe drivers. The incidence of older driver crashes and fatalities has declined steadily. These older drivers are keeping their licenses longer and driving more often. We also know they are less likely to talk on a cellphone while driving or drive under the influence of alcohol.

Delaware’s Sussex County is popular for retirees, with people 60-plus making up nearly 1 in 3 residents. But with limited public transportation and many rural roads, southern Delaware can be challenging to get around.

Consider this: Men outlive their driving years by about six years; women, by about ten years. How will this growing population ensure access to doctor visits, supermarkets and even social events. Will they become isolated?
