AARP will help host the sixth in a series of groundbreaking volunteer-development conferences at Miami-Dade College Nov. 7, AARP leaders in Miami Dade announced today.
“Have you been looking to get involved in your community? Want to help others make your community better but don't know where to start? Then you should consider Destino our one-day Leadership Academy,” said Ivonne Fernandez, AARP Florida Associate State Director and the creator and founder of Destino. “This is an opportunity for you to gather the tools to exercise your leadership, and be the influencer you are meant to be!”
The focus of the DESTINO leadership academy is to provide an introduction to practical tools, leadership development and multi-disciplinary learning opportunities to promote the participation of multi-cultural community members in areas of social impact and collaborative influence.
The DESTINO Leadership Academy brings together community leaders from local government, faith-based organizations and other corporations in Miami. Attendees will build leadership and community-engagement skills they can put to work on important social issues like education, civic engagement and collaborating against hunger, among others.
Now in its sixth year, DESTINO teaches its students the necessary skills to be effective communicators, successful entrepreneurs and all-around leaders who can bring about positive social change in their communities.
“We want to create positive social impact that will make our community a better place to live, where people can age with dignity and purpose,” said Fernandez.
AARP wishes to promote the active participation of multi-cultural communities in the U.S. political, legislative and business systems through the development and empowerment of leaders and the creation of opportunities to support community efforts with integrity and excellence, through collaborative networks.
This year’s key note speaker will be Alberto Carvalho, Superintendent of Miami-Dade public schools. Sponsors include AARP, United Way of Miami Dade, Miami Dade College, iCED- Institute for Civic Engagement & Democracy, Radio La Nueva y Radio Luz. Many of these same organizations and other community allies like La Familia de Broward and Toastmasters International are collaborating with different resources to build an effective agenda and ensure that DESTINO is a great success.
“When AARP works with community allies to equip people with the tools they need to achieve real possibilities in their communities, we are really fulfilling the mission Dr. Andrus set for us when she spoke of ‘an army of useful citizens’,” said Fernandez.
DESTINO will have different sessions, including How to Market Thru Social Media, Community Building, Public Speaking and others . These workshops were created with the purpose of teaching important skills for successful leadership.
DESTINO will take place on Saturday, November 7, 2015, 8:00 a.m. to 4 p.m., Miami Dade College North Campus- Building 3, 11380 NW 27th Ave. Miami, FL 33167.
