During AARP Florida's Lead Volunteer Meeting, we proudly announced Cheryl Jefferson as the recipient of the 2025 Tess Canja Award for Exceptional Volunteerism – AARP Florida’s highest volunteer honor. Cheryl is an AARP Florida Executive Councilmember and AARP Jacksonville Lead Volunteer.
Named after the late Tess Canja, a tireless advocate, trailblazer and former AARP National President, the award recognizes extraordinary commitment to improving the lives of older adults. Cheryl is the first AARP Florida volunteer to receive the award after Canja herself, whose daughter accepted posthumously last year.
A lifelong Jacksonville native, Cheryl has been an AARP Florida volunteer for over five years advocating for seniors in Northeast Florida. In addition to her outstanding volunteer work, Cheryl travels with her fellow volunteers to Tallahassee to meet with legislators and discuss issues impacting the lives of seniors in Florida.
Her passion stems from personal experience – having cared for both her mother and brother living with dementia. Her Husband, Bill, is a proud U.S. Air Force retiree, and together they share 38 years of marriage, three children, and five grandchildren.
"AARP Florida is grateful for Cheryl's many years of dedication to our organization's mission of serving those who cannot serve," explains Jeff Johnson, AARP Florida State Director. "She is extremely deserving of this honor."
AARP Florida extends heartfelt congratulations to Cheryl Jefferson for her exceptional leadership, compassion, and advocacy on behalf of Floridians 50+.
Congratulations, Cheryl!
