Florida Voters to Tallahassee: Hold Nursing Homes Accountable

AARP Florida 50+ Voter Survey: 95% of registered voters across party lines support holding nursing homes and other long-term care facilities accountable for abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation

TALLAHASSEE – AARP Florida today released results of its most recent survey highlighting Florida 50+ voters’ strong support of policies that ensure residents and their families can hold nursing homes and other long-term care facilities accountable for abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation.

AARP Florida State Director Jeff Johnson said, “Florida’s 50+ voters have spoken loud and clear. Our survey results show that Floridians strongly support policies that hold nursing homes accountable, fund adequate staffing and safety in nursing homes and long-term care facilities and ensure quality care for our most vulnerable.

“Florida lawmakers should listen to their constituents and the citizens of our state. Destructive legislation that protects nursing home industry executives over Florida’s families is a shameful attempt to further degrade the quality of Florida’s long-term care system and let nursing homes off the hook. AARP Florida will continue to be a strong voice for our members and all Floridians who demand and deserve better.”

Specific survey findings show:

• Hold Nursing Homes Accountable: 95% of registered voters in Florida support ensuring residents and their families can hold nursing homes and other long-term care facilities accountable for neglect, mistreatment, or financial exploitation. Party breakdown:

• Republicans: 96% support holding nursing homes accountable
• Democrats: 95% support holding nursing homes accountable
• Independents: 96% support holding nursing homes accountable
• Use State Funds for Adequate Staffing & Safety: 86% of registered voters in Florida want to ensure that state funding for nursing homes and other long-term care facilities is allocated toward the health and safety of residents.
• Quality Care for Nursing Home Residents is Essential: 96% of Florida voters agreed — the quality of care for nursing home residents is extremely or very important.
