This October, AARP Florida’s Advocacy Focus Sharpens

As we head into fall, AARP Florida remains deeply engaged in protecting the interests of older Floridians, especially when it comes to the rising cost of utilities. Over the past year, our team has been at the forefront of the Florida Power & Light (FPL) rate case, advocating for transparency, fairness, and affordability in the face of unprecedented proposed rate hikes. This builds on our longstanding efforts to oppose similar rate increase proposals from Duke Energy and TECO, the other electric utility companies regulated by the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC), where we fought to protect consumers from unjustified utility costs.

In August, FPL and several corporate interest groups submitted a proposed settlement to the PSC that would raise rates by nearly $1 billion by 2027, with additional increases through 2029. These hikes would disproportionately impact residential customers, many of whom are older adults living on fixed incomes. That’s why AARP Florida stepped in, joining forces with other advocates to support an alternative settlement proposal that was more favorable to residential customers.

Because of you and your efforts, AARP Florida will continue to speak out on behalf of utility consumers, ensuring the voices of everyday Floridians are heard. Together, we’ve delivered more than 34,000 petitions and nearly 6,000 public comments to the PSC. Every action strengthens our case and sends a clear message: Floridians deserve better than backroom deals that prioritize corporate profits over consumer protections.

After the hearing on FPL’s proposed settlement, set to begin on October 6th, the PSC is expected to make its final decision later this year — a ruling that will directly affect Florida consumers.

But our advocacy doesn’t stop now. Looking ahead to the 2026 Florida Legislative Session, our advocacy work is just getting started. Our volunteer advocates will once again join us at the Capitol, bringing their lived experiences and passion to the legislative process. Their voices are essential in helping lawmakers understand the real-world impact of their decisions.

AARP Florida is committed to being a fierce advocate for older adults. Whether it’s fighting unfair utility rate hikes or shaping policy that improves lives, we’re here to ensure that Floridians age with dignity, security, and opportunity.

Stay informed. Get involved. And let’s make sure that in every corner of Florida, the needs of older adults are not just heard—they’re prioritized. Learn more about AARP Florida’s Advocacy Efforts at www.aarp.org/fladvocacy.
