With New Hurricane Season Upon Us, Florida Residents Should Be Prepared

hurricane michael

As the state prepares for another hurricane season, AARP Florida is offering resources on how to shelter at home or evacuate.

All Floridians face the risk of natural disasters that can lead to power outages and mandatory evacuations. The danger is enhanced for older people and those in long-term care facilities who have limited mobility, health conditions or financial challenges, making it difficult for them to get out of the storm’s path.

Should a shelter-at-home or evacuation order be issued, residents in affected areas should be prepared with water, batteries, medications, important papers and COVID-19 supplies (hand sanitizer, masks). Last year was the third-most-active year on record for named storms. Hurricane season begins June 1.
