Attorney General Raúl Labrador issued a consumer alert last week, warning Idahoans on the text/call/email scam that claims recipients have missed jury duty and if they don’t immediately pay a fine, they could be arrested by local authorities or subject to even greater costs and penalties. As with many scams, criminals depend on a person’s law-abiding nature to scare them into making a payment, often through a link or QR code.

New research released today from the Association of Young Americans AYA (AYA) and AARP show student loan debt preventing Americans across three generations from saving for retirement or buying a home. As many students begin their academic year, nearly half of those with student loan debt say they owe more than $30,000. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, borrowers have over $1.4 trillion in student loan debt. The new research specifically shows that of those who have student debt, 45 percent of Millennials, 48 percent of Generation Xers, and 50 percent of Boomers owe $30,000 or more.

Live jazz will energize Idaho’s fall season when the popular Sun Valley Jazz & Music Festival returns for its 29th year. More than 200 musicians and 40 bands will perform at Sun Valley venues for five days starting Wednesday, Oct. 17. Professional instructors will also offer free dance lessons.

When it comes to scams, knowledge is power.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is looking to expand its team of volunteers for the upcoming tax season. Tax-Aide, now in its 51 st year, offers free in-person preparation and assistance to anyone, especially those 50 and older, who can’t afford a tax preparation service. Volunteers make a difference in their communities by assisting many older, lower-income taxpayers, and their families, who might otherwise miss out on the tax credits and deductions they’ve earned.

AARP Idaho and the Boise Veterans Affairs Medical Center are hosting a FREE veterans fraud prevention conference in Boise on August 27, 2018. The half day event is designed to give veterans the tools they need to identify and prevent becoming the victim of fraud. A recent AARP study shows veterans are frequently targeted by scam artists and victimized twice as often as the rest of the public.
