AARP Illinois Applauds Illinois Commerce Commission’s Landmark Decision in Ameren Electric Rate Case and Response to Peoples Gas Emergency Motion

Chicago, December 14 - AARP Illinois State Director Philippe Largent issued the following statement in response to the Illinois Commerce Commission’s (ICC’s) decisions in the Ameren Electric and Peoples Gas rate cases.

“On behalf of our 1.7 million members and all older adults across the state, AARP Illinois commends the ICC for its landmark ruling in the Ameren Electric rate case, striking down an unjustifiable rate increase that would have exacerbated financial pressures felt by 1.3 million Ameren customers, and especially older adults on fixed incomes. The ICC's decision to lower Ameren Electric’s proposed company profit margin, which will likely save customers tens of millions of dollars, is a testament to its commitment to ensuring fair utility rates and protecting Illinois ratepayers from undue increases on their utility bills.

We also applaud the ICC’s unwavering resolve in the face of Peoples Gas’ emergency motion asking for an additional $134 million, standing steadfast with ratepayers and maintaining its commitment to a fair and just decision-making process.

Both decisions not only solidify financial relief for ratepayers, but also underscore the power of collective advocacy. As a formal intervenor in both cases on behalf of Illinoisans 50-plus, AARP Illinois called for public hearings and collected 15,000 petition signatures from our members who spoke out against these increases, citing the undue burden they would place on their quality of life.

AARP Illinois extends heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated advocates, members and volunteers who passionately voiced their concerns and fought against the proposed rate increases. Their commitment played a pivotal role in achieving these victories and showcased the strength of community advocacy.

As these new rate decisions go into effect in January, AARP Illinois will remain dedicated to protecting the financial security of all consumers, and especially the older adults we represent.”
