AARP Illinois Applauds Many Aspects of Governor’s Plan for Energy Regulation Reform

AARP Illinois applauds the Governor’s plan for energy regulation reform in Illinois, in light of the ComEd scandal and in support of a clean energy future. While we do not agree with the entire plan as proposed, we see this as a major step forward and a good starting point for work to continue on this very important issue.

“Ending formula rates is something that AARP Illinois has virtually stood alone on since the inception of the arrangement in 2011,” says Bob Gallo, AARP Illinois State Director. “Formula rates tied the ICC’s hands in reviewing ComEd and Ameren spending, causing rates to soar. Giving the ICC its power back to scrutinize rate increases will slow the enrichment of the utility companies and will mean real savings for the hard-working ratepayers in this state.”

While AARP is confident that stopping nuclear bailouts should be the focus, we are encouraged to see that there is a call for much more scrutiny on Exelon’s nuclear power plant bailout scheme. We agree with the Governor that leaving the three-year capacity market for a state-run 15-year deal with the Exelon power plants is poor public policy that will increase electricity rates. This is something that AARP has consistently advocated against.

Moreover, for years, AARP has advocated for ending so-called “charitable” contributions by these big companies. In reality, the illegitimate practice of giving away ratepayer money to make themselves seem benevolent is actually providing the opportunity to gain even more power.

We look forward to continuing to work with the Governor in getting Illinois to a cleaner energy future and we appreciate his leadership in this area. Illinois deserves this clear and fair look into how we will move forward to guarantee affordable and reliable clean energy sources for residents.
