AARP Illinois Response to Graduated Income Tax results

AARP Illinois is disappointed to see that the Graduated Income Tax ballot failed.

"For years, the state's budget crisis has left millions of residents reeling," said Bob Gallo, AARP Illinois State Director. "The graduated income tax would have been a step in the right direction toward fixing Illinois' fiscal crisis. We will continue to push for commonsense solutions like this that won't shift the burden to older residents and middle-class families."

On behalf of our 1.7 million members, AARP Illinois will continue pressing to protect older Illinoisans and address  Illinois' fiscal crisis by challenging lawmakers to:

• Oppose taxing retirement income
• Protect access to the essential home and community services that allow older Illinoisans to live in their homes, and which are five times less costly than nursing home care.
• Address high property taxes in Illinois;
• Find other  solutions to our state's budget crisis.

One thing that was very clear during this election, voters 50+ were once again the deciding factor. Elected officials who fail to make these issues a priority will be held accountable by 50+ voters.
