AARP REQUEST FOR ARTIST PROPOSALS

Día de Muertos en Chicago – CTA Pink Line Train Project

Commissioned by AARP Chicago

Purpose of this Request : AARP Chicago will “wrap” a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Pink Line Train with a Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) theme. To that end, AARP Chicago will work with the Pilsen Planning Committee’s (PPC) Pilsen Arts & Culture Committee (PACC) to create a Curatorial Committee to assist in soliciting and making recommendations regarding the selected artwork to be created and displayed on the train. The Dia de Muertos Pink Line Train Project will run from Monday, October 15, 2018 – Sunday, November 11, 2018. The train will run through the Pilsen neighborhood as well as parts of Little Village, North Lawndale and other parts of the city highlighting this very special time of the year and also sharing that AARP is collaborating with Chicago’s Mexican-American community in educating the public and celebrating the day of the dead.

Assignment: AARP Chicago recognizes Día de Muertos as a beautiful Mexican holiday which honors the memory of loved ones. As an organization that values and works in communities nationwide, we are interested in proposals that demonstrate a genuine and traditional interpretation of Dia de Muertos and one which honors this holiday.

AARP Chicago works locally in communities such as Pilsen, Little Village, Bronzeville, Woodlawn and others on issues relating to health, financial well-being and self-improvement.

Applicant Eligibility : Proposal applicants must be artists who live and/or work primarily in Pilsen or Little Village -- or otherwise have a strong and significant connection to one of these neighborhoods. We are particularly interested in proposals that demonstrate a genuine and traditional interpretation of Dia de Muertos and one which honors this holiday. Artists age 50+ are strongly encouraged to apply.

Amount of Funding Available :  One artist will be selected and paid $5,000 which will cover the cost of the design and creation of the artwork. No additional funding or reimbursements will be paid to artist.

NOTE: It is the artist’s responsibility to cover all project-related expenses.

 

 

Selection Process and Timeline : The Día de Muertos Pink Line Train Curatorial Committee – a panel of appointed arts professionals, artists, and representatives of community-based organizations and community members – will review all submitted materials and make recommendations to AARP Chicago. The final grant award decision will be made by AARP Chicago. Below schedule is subject to change.

1. Artist’s Statement (1 page or less)

Please provide a written description your work. Like WHY YOU MAKE YOUR ART, WHAT INSPIRES OR DRIVES YOU TO MAKE IT, WHY PEOPLE SHOULD CARE, WHAT IT SIGNIFIES OR REPRESENTS, WHAT IT COMMUNICATES, WHAT'S UNIQUE OR SPECIAL ABOUT HOW YOU MAKE IT, and briefly, WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU. Also, if you have worked collaboratively on projects with community-based organizations or similar/relevant groups in the past, please describe such efforts here.

2. Artist’s Resume (2 pages or less)

3. JPEG Images of Previous Artwork (15 images or less, at least 150 dpi)

4. Corresponding Image List For each image, please include: title, medium, dimensions, brief description, and location, date of work, commissioning entity, and budget.

• All submission materials shall become the property of AARP Chicago and shall not be returned.

• No information contained in submissions shall be deemed confidential and such information may be shared with other related entities. Therefore, please do not submit any information that may be deemed proprietary in nature.

• The artist receives credit. AARP shall have unlimited, unrestricted, world-wide use in perpetuity to use any depiction of the artwork, during production and installation, for promotional, publicity, or other non-commercial purposes deemed appropriate for this and future.

• Neither AARP Chicago nor the Curatorial Committee shall be liable for any costs incurred by any respondent in the preparation, submittal, presentation or revision of its submission.

• AARP Chicago, at their discretion, without limitation, reserves the right to withdraw the RFP at any time; to discuss various approaches with one or more respondents (including parties not responding to the RFP); and change any terms of this RFP.

• No exceptions will be made for materials submitted after the stated deadline.
