When Illinois voters go to the polls in November, they will be asked to vote on whether to pass a Constitutional amendment to allow state lawmakers to impose a graduated income tax. AARP Illinois has formed a Ballot Initiative Committee to educate the public about why a graduated income tax would be in the best interest of the state’s 1.7 million members.
Illinois’ state budget situation is a mess. AARP is fighting for common sense solutions that fix our budget crisis. AARP believes the current plan to switch to a graduated income tax is a step in the right direction for these reasons:
The burden doesn’t fall on older Illinoisans: This plan protects older taxpayers and their families.
It gives lower and middle income folks a break: This plan protects the majority of Illinois households from income tax increases.
People pay their fair share: Only those who can afford it – the wealthiest 3 percent of households – will pay more under this plan.
