FIGHTING FOR YOU

Protecting Illinois’ nursing home residents
While nursing homes provide important care for many Illinois seniors, these seniors have also been vulnerable to abuse and neglect. There are too many cases of nursing homes giving dangerous antipsychotic drugs to residents who don’t need them—often without their families even knowing. That’s why AARP Illinois fought successfully for a new law that requires nursing homes to obtain voluntary, informed consent from residents or family before using antipsychotic drugs. The law also protects residents and improves care with respect to minimum staffing standards and requires enforcement with appropriately strong remedies for violations.

New Law Creates Caregiver Advisory Committee
AARP’s National Volunteer President Catherine Alicia Georges serves on the RAISE Family Caregiving Advisory Council, created by a bipartisan federal law that AARP fought hard to pass. The Council is charged with developing a national strategy to support family caregivers that includes communities, providers, government, and others.
