Legislation Would Create Criminal Sanctions for Elder Abuse in Iowa

When lawmakers return to Des Moines on Monday, Jan. 11, AARP Iowa will push for legislation to impose criminal sanctions for elder abuse. 

A similar bill passed the state Senate during the 2020 session, but the goal this year is to pass it into law. 

The proposed law would treat assault or theft against Iowans 60 or older as more serious crimes than they currently are and would create a new criminal offense of “financial exploitation against an older individual.”  

Elder abuse can take many forms, such as financial exploitation. Perpetrators are sometimes strangers, but many victims know their abusers, who are often family members. This is especially concerning during the pandemic, when many older adults are isolated at home.

AARP Iowa has joined with other advocates, such as law enforcement groups and financial institutions, to advocate for the bill’s passage.
