With Iowa’s state legislative session set to kick off on Monday, Jan. 9, AARP is inviting members to make their voices heard on issues that affect the quality of life for older adults.

A bill—championed by AARP Iowa—makes elder abuse its own crime for the first time in the state.

When lawmakers return to Des Moines on Monday, Jan. 11, AARP Iowa will push for legislation to impose criminal sanctions for elder abuse.

AARP Iowa, the state Office of Attorney General and other agencies are providing training for law enforcement officers, prosecutors and judges to help them address elder abuse in their communities. Funded by a three-year $400,000 federal grant, the project also provides services to victims—including housing and legal assistance—and strengthens intervention at the local level.
