Volunteer to Advocate for Older Iowans

volunteer-hands.jpg

The Iowa Legislature’s 2025 session kicks off on Monday, Jan. 13, and AARP is seeking volunteers to urge lawmakers to enact policies to help improve the lives of older residents throughout the state.

Legislative advocacy volunteers contact lawmakers, attend events at the state Capitol and testify before committees, among other duties. AARP Iowa’s top advocacy priorities next year include passing legislation to make it easier to build accessory dwelling units.

An ADU is a small residence, such as a backyard cottage, built on an existing single-family home lot. They can be an affordable housing option for older adults.

AARP will also push for a state tax credit for family caregivers to help offset related out-of-pocket expenses. Show support for such a tax credit at aarp.org/IAcaregiving. Learn more about becoming an advocacy volunteer at aarp.org/iowavolunteer.
