Congratulations: Claude "Shug" McGaughey

Another Proud Moment for Kentucky

We're proud to offer our sincerest congratulations Claude R. "Shug" McGaughey, III on capturing the 139th Kentucky Derby!

We know it takes teamwork and this is a proud Kentucky moment to have a Lexington native and a Kentucky-born thoroughbred claim the Kentucky Derby’s Garland of Roses. Even with the 19 horse field and slow track conditions, Joel Rosario and Orb delivered another impressive and exciting performance with their come from behind, 2 1/2-length victory. See our full letter of congratulations, here: Claude_R_Shug_McGaughey_congratulations_KY_Derby.

"Shug" and his team’s victory has captured the imagination of the nation and restored the dream of an overdue Triple Crown winner. It is another proud moment for our Commonwealth; we applaud you, the Phipps Family and the entire leadership team’s dedication and exceptional effort.

We know this is a well-deserved “dream come true”, and it is the pursuit of his dream that has rightfully landed "Shug" in Churchill Down’s winner circle and the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. AARP supports that same vision and works to help empower everyone to pursue their goals and dreams.

Congratulations!  Claude R. "Shug" McGaughey, III's accomplishments in horse racing have focused a global spotlight on Lexington, Kentucky’s signature industry, and our entire Bluegrass State. Enjoy this moment, and know that our Kentucky AARP members applaud the team's continued success as it prepares for Maryland and the second jewel in the Triple Crown – The Preakness.
