In a recent AARP survey, Kentucky registered voters 45 and older strongly supported proposals to help family caregivers navigate the health care system on their loved ones’ behalf.
More than 8 in 10 respondents said hospitals should record a caregiver’s contact information in the patient’s chart upon admission. More than 9 in 10 support requiring the hospital to keep the caregiver informed when the patient is discharged and requiring the hospital to show the caregiver how to perform follow-up medical tasks the patient will need at home.
Nearly 3 out of 4 Kentucky caregivers have handled complex care such as managing medications or other medical tasks.
