In August, AARP testified before the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging to spotlight a growing threat to Americans: fraud carried out by translational organized crime groups. Operating openly abroad, these networks are draining billions of dollars from victims, local communities and economies every year. Older adults are navigating a minefield of increasingly sophisticated scams that threaten not only their lifetime savings but even their homes, independence, and health. Money that was saved for retirement is instead supporting illicit activity around the world.

It's Halloween month, but that does not mean that you should expect scares or tricks from Medicare. It is hard to believe that it has been 17 years since 9/11/01. A career Sailor, I was “thirty-something” on the day America was attacked, and now I'm a “fifty-something” military retiree supporting AARP Maryland on veterans issues. On September 26, 2018, 11 outstanding Marylanders from communities across the state were honored for their volunteer service by AARP Maryland at our annual awards celebration at the Gathering Place in Clarksville, Md. We were also joined by dozens of other amazing AARP Maryland volunteers!
Congratulations to the The Beacon's Celebration of the Arts winners for 2018. Artists over age 50 from the District, Maryland and Virginia created and submitted hundreds of entries in four categories, incorporating visual and written works. "Art, in its various forms, is a great way to express one's creative ideas and freely display their emotions," says Hank Greenberg, AARP Maryland state director. “It’s exciting to see the wealth and diversity of talent on display.”

Technology is at a level that people hundreds of years ago would have never imagined. With this new level of tech comes more and more ways to breach your personal security. Companies with millions of dollars in assets and products have even fallen victim to data breaches and loss of information. Protecting your digital identity is becoming ever important.
Do you enjoy the legislative process? How about working with and advocating for like-minded individuals? Well, AARP Maryland needs your help! We’re looking to recruit up to two volunteers for advocacy and outreach. The ideal candidate(s) would be able to commute to Annapolis when available and provide assistance during the legislative session and beyond. Candidates should be available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9 am to 1 pm (hours are negotiable). Mileage and parking expenses during the position's run will be reimbursable.
