Jane King

Jane is currently a consultant writer on the range of issues involved in developing livable communities that support the ability of their aging residents to stay in their communities as they age. She has been a manager at AARP of program areas such as consumer protection and housing and helped to coordinate the development of AARP’s strategic direction for its work in support of livable communities.

Jane also had a long career in consumer protection, in the non-profit, government and corporate sectors. Before her employment with AARP, she created the consumer affairs office at MCI Telecommunications Corporation. She also worked as a management analyst for the Fairfax County Department of Consumer Affairs in Northern Virginia and served as the deputy director of the National Consumers League.

Jane has also taught junior high school, managed political campaigns in Northern Virginia and been very involved in her community. Following graduation from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she completed the course work for a graduate degree in English Literature at the University of Virginia.

Jane served four terms as the chair of the Alexandria Commission on Aging and also served as chair of the National Consumers League in Washington, DC for three terms. She is currently vice-chair of At Home in Alexandria and serves on the Cooperative Extension Leadership Council in Northern Virginia and volunteers as a Community Ambassador with AARP Virginia. In her volunteer role for AARP, she has led discussions of Medicare and health care reform and currently is presenting AARP’s HomeFit program.
