It seems like natural disaster season is never ending these days. Now is a good time to remind ourselves that after Mother Nature moves out the criminal scammers tend to move in.

AARP Minnesota applauds the Minnesota Legislature for passing the Transportation Omnibus bill, which included HF3436, a provision to reduce the rule requiring an 8-hour driver safety course to be eligible for the car insurance discount to 4 hours. Safe driving courses help keep older Minnesotans safe on the road, but course participation numbers have declined in the state with the eight-hour driver safety course.

Through Pride Month and beyond, AARP recognizes the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ older adults and actively works toward creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for them. We believe that LGBTQ+ adults are an integral part of the fabric of our nation and hope to see many of you at the following upcoming events sponsored by AARP Minnesota.

Minnesota’s primary election is Tuesday, Aug. 13, and voters should be aware of recent changes to voting processes. Among them:

Fighting for Minnesotans 50+ and Their Families

The Moorhead City Council awarded AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers from the Fargo-Moorhead area with the City of Moorhead’s MoorHeart Award.

A walking program, organized by Age-Friendly Northfield, aims to support healthier living for people of all ages. It's one of many projects and activities in the state focused on making Minnesota more age-friendly.

In 2023, the Minnesota Legislature passed a law directing the Secretary of State to conduct a study of issues related to voter engagement, education, and improvements to the election system. A survey on voting in Minnesota is the first opportunity for the public to provide input on whether they vote, where they get information about how to vote, barriers they face when voting, and other items. The Office of the Secretary of State (OSS) asked Management Analysis and Development (MAD) to conduct this survey to gather initial public input and comment on what works well for voters in Minnesota, what barriers voters face, and what improvements could be made to the voting process.
