Guard Your Wallet: Outsmart IRS Impostor Scams This Tax Season

Tax season isn’t just about filing returns; it’s also prime time for IRS impostor scams. In 2023 alone, consumers reported losing a staggering $5.8 million to these scams, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Here’s what you need to know to stay one step ahead of these crooks.

How IRS Impostor Scams Work
These scams often start with a robocall, urging you to press a number to speak with a live agent or call back using a provided number. The phone numbers may look legitimate, but scammers can manipulate caller ID to make it seem like the call is coming from the IRS.

Once they have you on the line, they might demand payment for back taxes and threaten arrest if you don’t comply. Scammers typically ask for payment via wire transfer, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. Remember, if you receive such a request, it’s a scam.

In some cases, impostors claim the IRS owes you an unexpected refund, attempting to steal sensitive information like your Social Security number or bank account details.

Protect Yourself
Even if a caller has your personal information to “prove” their identity, don’t believe them. Hang up and contact the entity using a trusted number from a paper statement or the entity’s official website.
