An AARP Vital Voices survey found that nearly 4 out of 5 Montanans 45 and over say it is extremely or very important to eliminate or phase out the state’s tax on Social Security income. The survey of 720 people was conducted in June 2025.

Under current law, older Montanans pay state income taxes on some of their Social Security income if their income is above a certain level.

Tim Summers, AARP Montana state director, says AARP nearly won passage in 2025 of a bill that would have raised that threshold. AARP will work to get the bill passed in the next legislative session, in 2027.
