Nearly 8,800 Nebraskans filed reports of fraud, identity theft and other complaints to the Federal Trade Commission in 2017. AARP Nebraska is teaming up with the Better Business Bureau to help shrink that number by sponsoring Secure Your ID Day on Saturday, April 21.

“Every two seconds, someone’s identity is stolen,” said Connie Benjamin, AARP state director. “One of the best defenses is to shred your confidential documents—such as canceled checks, credit card offers, monthly utility bills, medical bills, old bank statements and other financial documents.”

Omaha-area residents can drop off sensitive documents at a free shredding event on April 21, 8 a.m.-noon, in the Methodist Health System parking lots at 8511 W. Dodge Road. Each person can bring up to three boxes or bags of documents for shredding.
