AARP New Jersey Praises Governor Murphy and NJ Legislature for Establishing In-Person Early Voting
Statement from AARP New Jersey State Director Stephanie Hunsinger
NEW BRUNSWICK (March 30, 2021) – “We applaud Governor Murphy for enacting a bill today that expands voting access in New Jersey. The bill (A4830/S3203) establishes in-person early voting procedures that will allow voters to cast their ballots early in specially designated polling locations.
“The right to vote is among the most basic of all political and human rights. Free and fair elections are essential to democracy and maximum participation in the electoral process should be encouraged and promoted. Voter participation can be significantly increased through early voting, which provides all voters with the option to cast a ballot ahead of time.
“We applaud the Governor and NJ Legislature for recognizing the need to offer diverse voting options – including early voting – to maximize the chance for people to exercise their right to vote. Recent elections have revealed many flaws and practices that make it more difficult for citizens to vote, including the lack of early voting opportunities in New Jersey.
“New Jerseyans will be able to vote at an early voting site in their county 10 days before a general election, including the 2021 general election. We are thrilled New Jersey will be joining a list of other states that offer early in-person voting, and we look forward to working with the Governor and NJ Legislature to continue to ensure all New Jerseyans have safe and accessible voting options.
