Happy 90th Birthday, Social Security!

AARP event on 6/12

Let’s take a moment to celebrate one of the most enduring and impactful programs in American history: Social Security! That’s right, August 14th marks 90 years since Social Security was signed into law in 1935. And like any good nonagenarian, it’s got stories to tell, wisdom to share, a whole lot of people who are grateful for its existence and it needs our care.

A Little History Lesson (Don’t Worry, It’s Quick!)
Many don't remember firsthand the Great Depression. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law as part of the New Deal. The idea was simple but revolutionary: provide financial support to older Americans so they wouldn’t face poverty in their later years. It was a bold move, and it laid the foundation for a safety net that millions rely on today.

Why It Still Matters—Just As Much Now As It Did Then
Fast forward to today, and Social Security is more than just a monthly check. It can be a lifeline. For many seniors, it’s the difference between choosing between groceries and medication. It’s peace of mind. It’s dignity. In fact, Social Security provides income to nearly 69 million Americans, including retirees, disabled workers, and survivors of deceased workers.

And here’s some fun facts:

  • Social Security makes up at least 50% of the income of 39% of households with residents over 65+ in New Jersey. For one in four, it’s 90% or more. That’s not just important—it’s essential.
  • 377,000 New Jersey seniors depend on Social Security to stay out of poverty.
  • Social Security payments inject $38.8 billion into New Jersey's economy.

So, What’s the Secret to Its Longevity?
Like any good birthday guest of honor, Social Security has adapted over the years. It’s weathered economic storms, political debates, and demographic shifts. But its core mission has remained the same: to support Americans when they need it most.

Still, we need to care for it like any other nonagenarian. Social Security and Medicare require adjustments to remain sustainable. Without congressional action, Social Security benefits could be reduced by nearly 19% in the next nine years. That would be a loss of about $4,000 a year for the average retired beneficiary. AARP will continue to advocate to keep it healthy for all generations and ask you work with us. You can add your name and pledge to be part of the fight: We earned our Social Security through every paycheck and deserve every penny and great customer service. Visit www.aarp.org/weearnedit
