Unmasking the Impostors: AARP NJ 2023 Fraud Summit Recap

AARP New Jersey is committed to fighting back against fraud and giving you the tools and resources you need to protect yourself and your loved ones.

We hosted our annual Fraud Summit on August 9 in Somerset, New Jersey. This year’s Summit, “Unmasking the Impostors,” gathered more than 140 people to learn about fraud and scams.

The keynote speaker, Doug Shadel, took us behind the scenes and into the mind of a scammer by playing audio from real conversations between scammers and victims. This gave us an inside look into the tactics and language scammers use to deceive their victims, and how we can protect ourselves.

The event included a panel of several fraud prevention leaders from around the state from organizations like the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) and Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and NJ Senior Medicare Patrol also attended to provide information and resources on protecting ourselves and our loved ones from fraud and scams.

Throughout the Summit, participants were able to ask the speakers questions, and we all enjoyed a full breakfast and lunch while also learning facts about fraud at our Plinko game. Participants described the event as timely, informative, and very much needed for the community.
