As of November 1, 2025, millions of Americans—including many older North Dakotans—may not receive their monthly food benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. This disruption affects individuals living on fixed incomes, many of whom rely on SNAP to afford groceries and maintain their health.

AARP filed to intervene on behalf of residential customers in Xcel Energy’s proposal to increase residential natural gas rates in 2024. The proposed rate increase would raise monthly bills by 12.5% or $6.75 per month for residential customers.
BISMARCK, N.D. – AARP strongly opposes Montana Dakota Utilities (MDU) proposal to increase residential natural gas rates by $35.3 million in 2024. The rate increase request made to the North Dakota Public Service Commission would mean that residential customers will see a 9.84 percent increase in their monthly bill.
